A simple state of mind to help you get ready for an eventual move.
“Would I take this item with me if I were moving?” (sell it, donate it, give it away).
“This room needs painting, i think I’ll do it now,” (and I get to live in a freshly painted room). And … I’m not so stressed if I do decide to move at a later date.
“How does this room look? is this how I would want it to look if I were showing the house?”
Starting thinning out personal items and experiment with moving things around. Turn around, step away and then take a fresh look.
These are easy steps to get you started. And, if you don’t move, you get to enjoy the benefits of your work. It’s a Win-Win situation! Plus, it’s fun.
Hint: Small chunks – This task can be overwhelming, so tell yourself you will only do this little bit or just aim for 15 minutes. It is amazing what happens if you take this approach, a little here, a little there and VOILA!
I once had a client who asked me to go through his home and make recommendations for improvements to get the home on the market. I didn’t see anything and told him I thought the house looked to be in great condition. He said “ I have a theory – if something needs attention, take care of it now and enjoy having it fixed.” That little pearl of wisdom changed my life; I now look at household maintenance in a totally new way – just do it and enjoy having it done! Simple.
