Gas stoves – who knew! While the epitome of coooking, they produce nitrogen dioxide and other indoor air pollutants including formaldehyde and particulate matter. Ventilate or consider a non-gas stove.
Drinking water – Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers are toxic and can get into the groundwater, not to mention what they do to pollinators, butterflies, bees, birds and pets. Glyphosate (Roundup) leaches into well water supplies. Lead can leach into the ground from prior sanding of lead paint off an old house. Old plumbing can contain lead. Pre 1950’s farming used lead arsenate-based pesticides. Bottom line, thoroughly and periodically test your water for radon, arsenic, uranium, lead, fluoride and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) are additional tests homeowners must request.
Non-stick cooking pans. Overheating these pans causes the release of toxic fumes. Scratched pans can release plastic particles into the food being cooked. Cast iron does a great job.
Fire retardant, stain-resistant rugs, furnishings and clothing contain PFAS as well as wrinkle-resistant clothing.
Personal care and cosmetics. Long-lasting lipstick, mascara and other products including lotions, nail polish, cleansers, shaving cream, eye liner, and eye shadow may contain PFAS.
